Silly me decided I wanted to be a sun goddess the past few weekends and attain my goal of Lupita rich skin. I’m nearly there BTW, and YES I wore sunblock. On the downside, this means that my tried and true foundations are now too light and have me looking like a tan Geisha. Anywho, this means, in order to maintain my fly it was time to go through the arduous process of shade matching a new foundation. I hate this process. It’s time consuming, annoying, and most of all EXPENSIVE! So when I heard that NYX had come out with foundation shade mixers to add to my current foundation , and they were finally available at my local Ulta, I was hype.
So I ventured to Ulta after a long day at work and scoured the shelves for these darn mixers. Although they were listed as in stock on the website, I could not find them for the life of me. You know why I couldn’t find them? Because they were still in boxes be initially stocked on the shelves. So after concurring this shopping trip (and also finding a little girl’s lost Ipod) I came home a did a first test.
I purchased the mixers Warmth and Deep. I started with the deep because I thought it was just what I needed. Boy was I wrong. The deep turned my foundation into a muddy colored mess. So it went into the return pile. Then I tried the warmth and it was amazing. It created my perfect match. So I was excited to try it out the next day at work. This is when my opinion changed.
I couldn’t remember the exact ratios of mixer to foundation that I used since it comes in a squeeze tube instead of a measurable dispenser like a dropper. Luckily, I was able to mix the same color the first try and applied it and the rest of my makeup. I was in a rush so out the door and off to work I went.
I wore this on my face all day, in a more than adequately air conditioned office and my once matte, long wearing foundation was shiny, breaking up, and rubbing off on everything. This all happened despite setting powder and setting spray. And to add insult to injury, I woke up the next day with a few pimples. 🙁
So my day started wonderfully and then when I saw my face at the end of the day, I was sad puppy disappointed.
Pros:
- Price- Retails for only $9.99 at Ulta
- Does adjust foundation shades to workable colors
Cons:
- Can’t measure amounts used to get correct shade, so each use is a guessing game
- Changes the finish and longevity of foundation. My matte, longwear foundation became a satin/dewy finish and that broke down and rubbed off only a few hours into the day.
- May cause breakouts for sensitive, acne prone skin
- Horrible for oily skin
So while the idea of these was great. A cost effective alternative to the CoverFX Custom Cover Drops. The execution left much to be desired.
